What are endowments?
Endowments are powerful instruments. They give the people who create them the power to change the world around them. To change lives. To preserve values that are important to them. To insure a quality program they care about does not become a victim to hard economic times.
Endowments are critical to the long-term survival of nonprofits like The Ohio Historical Society because they create stability in the face of financial fluctuation, bad economies, and years when other donations are down, without disrupting services or losing valuable programs. These funds enable the Society to participate in excellent opportunities when they emerge. Endowments allow an organization to meet future needs, add capacity for improvement, and have the ability to respond in an emergency.

Who funds endowments?
Who creates these funds? Wealthy individuals? Actually endowments are created by ordinary people who want to make an extraordinary impact. Citizens play a critical role in transforming this democracy. Establishing an endowment allows you to make changes where you feel changes are needed. You can actually do something to preserve things that are important to you.
Why should I consider creating an endowment?
Establishing an endowment ensures growth for a much-loved organization and preserves your gift for all time. It can be used to honor, pay tribute to, or remember a teacher, mentor, friend or family member, leaving a living legacy and an enduring memorial to that individual or family. Endowments can be used to establish family philanthropy by creating a family fund to which generations that follow can add. Family philanthropy connects us with our children and provides an opportunity for a special family relationship working together for a common goal.
How do I get involved?
You can create a named endowment at The Ohio Historical Society for a minimum of $15,000. You can even fund it over a period of three years, rather than all at once.
Not a bad investment - especially considering you might just change the world.

A Daughter's Story
"My father, Charles A. Jones, loved history. He was a life member of the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical
Society and helped secure many exhibits for its museum in Columbus. I wanted that dedicated spirit of his to continue on and found
an excellent means of doing that by establishing an endowment at the Ohio Historical Society in Dad's name. By doing so, I'm
honoring Dad and helping to make sure that Ohio's history is preserved to enrich the lives of our children and grandchildren."
