The Ohio Historical Society's collections include over three million 2-D and 3-D artifacts dating from prehistoric times to the 21st century. Our staff are constantly at work acquiring, conserving, cataloging, and restoring
our collections, which can be viewed at dozens of museums throughout the state. In addition, our archaeologists continually seek to uncover and preserve evidence of the past to educate and inform our modern lives.

Fort Ancient Archaeological Discovery
A routine archaeological survey conducted at Fort Ancient in 2005 revealed striking evidence of a previously undiscovered 'Great Circle' structure that once stood
in a field across from the visitor center. In 2006, under the Society’s direction, archaeologist Dr. Robert Riordan of Wright State University conducted
a six-week field school at Fort Ancient to investigate a portion of the detected circle. Although only one percent of the circle was studied,
students and researchers found an extraordinary amount of pottery, some of which had painted lines on it – highly unusual for the Hopewell culture.
Funding is now being sought for the continued exploration of this exciting discovery, which will add significantly to the body of knowledge about the
Fort Ancient and Hopewell peoples.

Save the Flags Campaign
A colorful part of Ohio's military history is in danger of crumbling away.
The Ohio Battle Flag Collection contains approximately 500 flags from five wars in which Ohioans participated; most notably the Civil War.
Our collections department is working to conserve these beautiful remnants of Ohio's glorious past, but we need your help!
Funds raised by the Save the Flags Campaign will help us achieve the following conservation goals:
- Use new conservation techniques to save the flags from further deterioration
- Make the flags available again for research and examination
- Provide for possible exhibit, under suitable conditions for preservation
Your support will help ensure the long-term conservation of these significant artifacts from Ohio's history. Individuals and groups may choose to adopt a specific flag or provide general support for the overall effort.

Gay Ohio History Initiative (GOHI)
In January 2006 the Ohio Historical Society and Outlook Media partnered to form the Gay Ohio History Initiative (GOHI), an effort to
preserve, archive and curate Ohio’s Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual and Transgender community’s history and culture. GOHI is the Society’s inaugural
project in a broader multi-cultural historical initiative to collect and preserve the often overlooked and untold history of Ohio’s minority
populations. To ensure that this collection is properly maintained and updated for future generations, GOHI is establishing an
endowment, which will support the care of collection items, the acquisition of new items and, eventually, a curator who can devote their
time to enhancing, researching and documenting the collection.
