School History Day events provide a venue to showcase students’ work to family and community
members and determine which entries will advance to the district History Day event in your area.
View the sample letter to parents (PDF) and press release (PDF) for ideas on how to
spread the word about your History Day event.
Judges can be teachers from the school district, local political leaders, college and
university professors and graduate students, historical organization staff, librarians, and more.
Use this sample invitation letter (pdf) to reach likely judge candidates in your community.
Judges should be given an orientation (PDF) to familiarize them with the judging process.
Use the same handouts that we give the judges at the district and state events.
These can be sent prior to the event and then reviewed on the day of the event.
The judging process (PDF; 6KB) outlines how to greet the student, read process papers,
view projects, question the student, and discuss the entries.
Judging tips (PDF; 7KB) provides insight on how to make judging a positive learning experience for both
the student and the judge.
Go to the Contest Materials to download evaluation forms and judging instructions. Evaluation forms
are used by judges to provide feedback and rank projects based on the criteria.
