Ohio History Comes Alive In Holiday Events
Ohio Historical Society presents festive family fun at sites around the state

COLUMBUS, Ohio, October 29, 2007 – The Ohio Historical Society presents a series of festive holiday events in November and December at several of its sites around the state.

Holidays at Adena will be presented Nov. 10-11, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Adena Mansion & Gardens in Chillicothe. Thomas Worthington's home will be decorated for the holidays, with tours focusing on early 19th-century holiday customs. A special children's tour will include story time. Other features include period holiday music, refreshments, a chance to make a souvenir and shopping in the museum store. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students, or $6 and $3 for OHS members. Later in the month, the 19th-century historic site will offer a Holiday Wreath-Making Workshop Nov. 23-24, from 1-3 p.m. Cost is $35 or $25 for OHS members. Ohio Village hosts a series of holiday events, starting with In Praise of Thanksgiving on Nov. 18 from 4-7 p.m. As a prelude to Thanksgiving Day, guests are invited to enjoy a traditional holiday at the Village. A concert by the Ohio Village Singers at the Village church will be followed by a bountiful harvest dinner at American House Hotel. Fee is $57 or $47 for OHS members. Why fight the crowds and spend lots of money? Come to the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus for It’s All About Money on Nov. 23, the traditional day of holiday shopping, and learn how to save money instead. In conjunction with Once Upon a Dime: The World of Money exhibit, parents and children can design their own money and play trading and bartering games plus enjoy other fun, money-saving activities and crafts. Hours are from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, $3 for students and free for OHS members. Parking is $4 per vehicle and free to OHS members. Piqua Historical Area will host A Dickens of a Murder Mystery on the Farm on Dec. 1 with two seatings: 4-6:30 p.m. and 7-9:30 p.m. This very special holiday event begins with a holiday dinner in John Johnston’s dining room. From there, guests will visit each room of the Johnston home decorated for the holidays. Characters will provide clues needed to solve a holiday mystery. A Victorian-style Christmas returns to Ohio Village in Columbus beginning with The Pleasure of the Cup: Drinks of the 19th Century, on Dec. 1 from 7-9:30 p.m. Resembling of a modern-day pub crawl, visitors will sample and learn the lore behind popular concoctions of the day at featured Ohio Village locations. As a part of Marietta’s Hometown Holiday Weekend, parents can bring their children to a holiday party to make old-fashioned gifts for family and friends at the Holiday Celebration on the Frontier at the Campus Martius Museum on Dec. 1 from 5-8 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $10 for children. Ohio Historical Society Statewide Holiday Events

Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont hosts two a very special events in December to celebrate the holidays. On Dec. 1, parents and children can enjoy a holiday tea and seasonal entertainment at Christmas is for Kid’s Tea on Dec. 1 from 1-3 p.m. Admission for the tea is $20 for adults and $12 for children. On Dec. 6-8, Christmas Dinners at Spiegel Grove feature carriage rides, six-course Victorian feasts and holiday entertainment. For the dinners, cost is $250 per person. Zoar Village will host Christmas at Zoar Dec. 1-2 from 10 a.m.- 7 p.m. on Saturday and from noon-5 p.m. on Sunday. Visitors will experience an old-world Christmas by singing along with carolers, touring decorated private homes and museum buildings, sampling traditional German Christmas delicacies, and buying holiday gifts at the craft show and Zoar shops. The main holiday event at Ohio Village in Columbus, Dickens of a Christmas, takes place Dec. 7-8 and Dec. 14-15, from 6-9 p.m., and on Dec. 16, noon-5 p.m. Step into the world of Charles Dickens and the Victorian Christmas made famous in his stories from plum pudding to caroling to the characters from his writings. Admission for the family-oriented event is $11 for adults and $8 for students ages 6-12, and $9 and $6 for Ohio Historical Society members. Children ages five and under are admitted at no charge. At the American House Hotel at Ohio Village in Columbus, Dickens of a Dinner will be served Dec. 7-8 and Dec. 14-15 at 6 p.m., and Christmas Brunch at Ohio Village will be served on Dec. 16 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. While dining enjoy a visit by the venerated author himself, Charles Dickens, and listen to traditional carols performed by the Ohio Village Singers. After dinner or brunch, take time to enjoy the holiday festivities in Ohio Village at Dickens of a Christmas. Dinner is $57 per person or $47 per person for Ohio Historical Society members. Brunch is $35 per person or $28 for members. Brunch price for children ages 6-12 is $15.95, or $12.95 for child members. Parking is $4 per vehicle and free to OHS members. Celebrate the holidays at Fort Meigs in Perrysburg on Dec. 9 from noon-5 p.m. War of 1812 soldiers and civilians will be on hand to provide demonstrations, answer questions about the War of 1812 and discuss holiday customs of the period. Enjoy hot cider and cookies and help decorate an ornament for the tree. The museum will be open for touring. Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for children or free to OHS members.
