Director of Collections

Summary:
Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations that develop, manage, preserve, and provide access to the Society's collections; assumes a leadership role, as a member of the executive management team, in the advancement of the organization's strategic priorities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate entrepreneurial leadership in developing short- and long-range plans for the division, consistent with the institution's strategic vision.
  • Establish and carry out an OHS standard of excellence for all curatorial, collections management, and collections access programs that is consistent through all programs and in each location.
  • Supervise Society personnel to include ensuring overall compliance with OHS employment policies and procedures, defining job duties, establishing work goals, setting performance standards, evaluating performance, and recommending the hire and promotion of staff.
  • Develop and administer $3.0 million operating budget for the division.
  • Promote financial health of programs through increasing revenue generation.
  • Cooperate with the Marketing Office on implementation of effective public relations and marketing activities. In addition, cooperate with the Office of Institutional Advancement to identify grant opportunities; write, supervise, and/or assist in the preparation of grant applications as necessary.
  • Pursue avenues to expand institutional involvement to a variety of stakeholders and constituents. Address feedback or request from public and local communities and establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the local communities.
  • Cooperate with state offices, academic institutions, museums, public history organizations, and other potential institutional collaborators.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
The following departments and units will report to the Director of Collections: Curatorial Services, Collection Services, Research Services, State Archives, and Digital/Reproduction Services.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience:
Master's degree (M.A.) or equivalent work experience plus a minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible administration; highly experienced senior manager with demonstrated relevant experience in all or many of the areas of responsibility.

Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management or key constituents.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to manage operating and project budgets. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, etc. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Technical Skills:
Sound computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Suite.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Physical Demands:
Requires prolonged sitting, frequent standing, bending, stooping, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Requires normal range of hearing and manual dexterity sufficient to operate computer keyboard, telephone, photocopier, calculator, and other office equipment as needed.

Work Environment:
Normal office environment and travel to other institutional locations. Requires ability to work under stressful conditions and availability to work irregular and weekend hours and travel on day and overnight trips.
