Administrator, Online Catalog
Summary:
The Online Catalog Administrator serves as lead administrator of the Society's integrated library system (SirsiDynix Horizon system) and is responsible for all aspects thereof, including development and maintenance of interfaces between Horizon and all other systems and integration of locally developed and third party applications with Horizon, functional support for all Horizon modules, and creation of custom SQL reports. The Online Catalog Administrator works with the Horizon Technical Standards Committee to communicate needs, develop new ideas, and resolve problems relating to the online catalog and collection management systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as administrator of the SirsiDynix Horizon system as customized for the Ohio Historical Society.
- Ensure system security and functionality.
- Provide SQL-based reports for routine collection management and statistical analysis.
- Plan, coordinate and implement all applicable system projects, enhancements, maintenance, upgrades, and update existing codes, tables, menus, and views.
- Serve as primary technical liaison with SirsiDynix and OCLC Online Computer Library Center.
- Work with staff to initiate and develop innovative access to electronic resources using Z39.50 and other access technologies.
- Ensure that all system backup procedures are followed.
- Evaluate and make recommendations for staff training needs, hardware, software, and Horizon-associated web site needs.
- Provide training support and documentation to staff regarding use of the ILS and related applications.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:
Master's degree in library or information science or a closely related field or equivalent work experience. Plus three or more years professional-level information systems experience in an archives, library, museum, or corporate environment.
Language Skills:
Strong communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical groups. Ability to put ideas into tangible form.
Mathematical Skills:
Requires intermediate level mathematical skills.
Technical Skills:
Thorough knowledge of the principles governing integrated library and collections information systems; Horizon or closely related system; SQL and Sybase, MARC formats and library cataloging rules. Experience with: procedures and applications regulating the digitization and mounting of documents on the world wide web; web site design and management. Familiarity with emerging library technologies, including Library 2.0, Web 2.0 and RFID is desirable.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, pay attention to detail and meet deadlines.
Physical Demands:
Requires prolonged sitting (chiefly at a computer terminal) and some bending, stooping, and stretching. Also required on occasion is the lifting and moving of personal computer equipment.
Work Environment:
Majority of the work takes place in an office environment. Work may be stressful at times; hours may occasionally be long.
